HomePhotoDART Digital Diary
Rachel here, the person behind the PhotoDART project. The project is based on a concept from 20 years ago while sitting in my car….contemplating my life and what I wanted to do with it. What I wanted to do was to create a place that provided a sense of belonging for young people within a creative community context. Back then it was a picture of an old house by the beach with an open fire where people could drop in, create something and add to the community. It was to be their place. What came to mind that night has stayed with me and finally the ‘community’ is beginning...but in a slightly different form - the Internet. But where possible I will make an open fire!

So what is PhotoDART?

The purpose of PhotoDART is to utilize the practice of photography and New Media as a tool for community and cultural development. It is a ‘grassroots’ approach to photography and New Media that endeavors to explore themes of identity, culture and community in ways that develop critical understanding, life skills and community awareness. PhotoDART also aims to provide individual and collective experiences of empowerment by giving voice to the communities, social groups and schools that participate. PhotoDART therefore seeks to benefit any community that considers awareness, empowerment and the building of relationships to be crucial steps toward the healthy development of its members and the community as a whole.

When is it happening?

This 2nd semester - 2009 - I will be running another 4 PhotoDART projects at 3 different VCAL providers as well as a project in Bourke, NSW. The themes of the projects will include Human Rights, Positive Body Image and Binge drinking. Big issues for developing minds. I will also be studying Community Cultural Development at VCA Melbourne Uni which will be awesome and help me refine and expand my ideas.

I took this walk to ease my mind
To find out what's gnawing at me
Wouldn't think to look at me,
that I've spent a lot of time in education
It all seems so long ago
I'm a thinker, not a talker
I've no-one to talk to, anyway

I can't see the... more
